2010 • Shot in San Francisco, CA

A colorful human kaleidoscope is created by Emmy Award winning tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith dancing to Paolo Nutini’s song, New Shoes.

Director: Kate Duhamel
Dancing and Choreography: Jason Samuels Smith
Director of Photography: Jack Conte
Video Editor: Tim Hahn

This is the first dance video I made, and came from an idea that popped into my head when I heard the song New Shoes on the radio.  After months of trying to forget this crazy idea, I found Jason in New York, and he agreed to come to San Francisco to make the video.  He wore 8 different colors of pants, so no color changing in post, and the edit took months because each piece of the kaleidoscopes are unique little slices of film.  Jason danced this dance about 50 times over two days, and his precision was astounding.  Only ever off by a frame, 1/24th of a second, if at all!

Honorable Mention

Behind The Scenes

After shooting wrapped on the music video we were shooting with Jason Samuels Smith, we followed him to Market St. in San Francisco where he met up with some friends and showed off his tap skills.
